Celebrating the Spirit of Sharadiya & Durga Puja

A Heartfelt Evening Honoring Mothers, Scholars & Changemakers

As the city of Kolkata begins to glow in the early lights of Sharadiya, and preparations for Durga Puja fill the air with joy, devotion, and celebration, a very special initiative brought the community together on the evening of 20th September to honor those who truly embody the spirit of the goddess—mothers, students, and changemakers.

Hosted at 57/1, Keshab Chandra Sen Street, and organized by the 38 No. Ward Citizens’ Forum, in association with the Sudama Devi Bhagwan Das Jaiswal Foundation and the Rotary Club of Calcutta Renaissance, this event was not just a gathering—it was a celebration of gratitude, empowerment, and deep community connection.

A Tribute to 100 Mothers: Celebrating Unseen Strength

In a culture where motherhood is revered but often goes unrecognized in day-to-day life, the event began with a moving tribute to 100 mothers from the local community. Each of these women was honored with a traditional saree, symbolizing grace, respect, and cultural pride.

This gesture was more than ceremonial—it was emotional. Many of the mothers expressed how rare it is to be appreciated in such a public and heartfelt way. Their smiles lit up the evening, as the audience stood in applause, acknowledging their sacrifices and strength.

“In my 60 years, no one ever gave me a saree like this just to say ‘thank you’. Today, I felt seen,” shared one of the honored mothers, her eyes filled with emotion.

Empowering the Next Generation: Scholarships for 10 Bright Students

Recognizing the vital role of education in transforming lives, the event also focused on supporting the aspirations of young scholars. Ten students, carefully selected based on academic performance and financial need, were awarded scholarship amounts to help them continue their education with confidence and dignity.

From school supplies to tuition support, these scholarships aim to remove barriers and encourage young minds to dream big. It was inspiring to witness the joy and hope in their eyes as they accepted the awards on stage, cheered on by the audience.

“With this support, I can now buy my textbooks and continue my coaching classes. I promise to work even harder,” said a scholarship recipient.

An Evening of Culture, Unity & Joy

The program unfolded with beautiful cultural performances, soulful music, and messages from community leaders, educators, and philanthropists. From classical dance to poetry recitations, the evening embraced the richness of Bengal’s heritage and the unity of its people.

Speeches from the organizers and partnering foundations highlighted the importance of community engagement and grassroots empowerment. Representatives from the Rotary Club of Calcutta Renaissance emphasized the need to keep such inclusive efforts going, especially during festivals when the spirit of togetherness is most alive.

“Durga Puja is about the triumph of good over evil. Tonight, we saw the triumph of kindness, compassion, and community,” said a member of the organizing team.

Gratitude & Way Forward

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the guests, volunteers, performers, and supporting organizations who made this event a success. The warm response from the community reinforces our belief that even small gestures of kindness can create a big impact.

The 38 No. Ward Citizens’ Forum, along with our partners, remains committed to hosting more such initiatives that honor tradition while creating pathways for change. As we step into the vibrant season of Durga Puja, let this event remind us all to celebrate the power of women, the promise of youth, and the beauty of giving back.

As the evening came to a close, the spirit of togetherness, gratitude, and celebration lingered in the hearts of everyone present. The smiles on the faces of 100 honored mothers, the hopeful eyes of 10 scholarship recipients, and the warm interactions among community members painted a picture of what true social harmony looks like.

This event was more than a celebration tied to a festival—it was a movement of appreciation and empowerment. In the midst of growing urban hustle, cultural shifts, and social challenges, this initiative brought us back to our roots: honoring the unsung heroes of our daily lives, and supporting the promise of tomorrow.

By choosing to highlight mothers, who often stand silently behind the success of families, and students, who carry the weight of our shared future, the event struck a delicate yet powerful balance between tradition and progress. The collaboration between the 38 No. Ward Citizens’ Forum, the Sudama Devi Bhagwan Das Jaiswal Foundation, and the Rotary Club of Calcutta Renaissance was a perfect example of how collective effort can lead to meaningful social change.

More Than Just a Gathering—A Symbol of What We Can Achieve Together

Throughout the evening, one message stood out: when a community comes together with intention, compassion, and respect, incredible things can happen.

This event sowed seeds—not just of joy and celebration—but of belonging, dignity, and hope. It reminded everyone that festivals like Durga Puja are not just religious or cultural milestones, but opportunities to reflect, give back, and uplift others.

We witnessed emotional moments, inspirational stories, and a genuine sense of unity that transcended age, gender, and background. The saree offered to a mother, the cheque handed to a student—these were not just gifts, but symbols of acknowledgment and trust.

Looking Ahead: Building on This Momentum

With the overwhelming response and encouragement received, the 38 No. Ward Citizens’ Forum is inspired to make this an annual tradition—a legacy event that continues to grow in scale and spirit. Plans are already being discussed to include health initiatives, skill development workshops, and mentorship programs in future editions.

Our goal is to ensure that no one in our community feels invisible or left behind. Whether it is an elderly mother who deserves recognition or a student striving to reach their dreams, we want to be a part of their journey—and we invite you to join us.
